The Fitnessgram Letter |
|
February 18, 2008 Dear Parent/Guardian, The Texas Education Agency has advised that during the 80th Legislative Session, Senate Bill 530 was passed and was signed into law by Governor Perry to require a yearly physical fitness assessment for all students in public schools grades 3-12 starting with the 2007-2008 school year. As a result of this bill, the state has mandated that the Cooper Institute Fitnessgram physical fitness assessment will be used as the state’s tool for evaluation. At Cinco Ranch High School, the Fitnessgram physical fitness assessment will take place this Friday, February 22, 2008. The Fitnessgram physical fitness assessment is not based on athletic ability, but on good health which is so important to living a happy, productive life. Fitnessgram tests all students regardless of age, gender, or ability. The Fitnessgram results will provide information to your son or daughter about his/her physical condition and how it can be improved. It does not compare one child to another. Parents and students will find answers to frequently asked questions by referring to the following website www.fitnessgram.net . The Fitnessgram Test items for Cinco Ranch High School include: · Either the mile run for students enrolled in an athletic period or the Pacer for our non-athletes (These tests measure aerobic capacity.) · Push ups (This test measures upper body muscular strength and endurance.) · Curl ups (These are modified “sit ups” with knees bent, and they measure abdominal muscular strength and endurance.) · Shoulder Stretch (This test measures flexibility.) · Trunk Lift (This test measures trunk extensor strength and flexibility.) · Body Mass Index (This test measures body composition: appropriateness of weight relative to height.) On February 22nd, your son or daughter should wear dress code length shorts or sweat pants, a t-shirt, and tennis shoes. If your child forgets to wear the proper testing attire, he/she will proceed with the fitness test in what he/she wore to school on February 22nd unless it is necessary to provide school owned sweatpants and t-shirts for modesty purposes. If your son or daughter has a documented medical condition, not on record with the nurses’ office, that would preclude him or her from participation in the Fitnessgram physical fitness assessment, or portions of the assessment, please contact the school nurse. For the 9th grade center clinic call 281-237-7025 for the 10th -12th main campus clinic call 281-237-7026. All information must reach the clinic before closing at 3:10 p.m. on Feb 21st. Should your child be absent on February 22nd, he or she will make up the Fitnessgram physical fitness assessment at a future date to be set by the campus. An absence on February 22nd will count as an absence toward exemptions in class periods 1-7. Please encourage your child’s attendance. Your son or daughter will receive his/her results from the Fitnessgram physical fitness assessment from a district mail out at the end of the semester. The Fitnessgram test cannot be failed. It is to be used as a guide to plan a personal and individual physical activity program. We hope that these results will be used to encourage progress towards reaching optimum health.
