BOND INITIATIVE 1982
In October 1982 the voters approved a $75 million bond issue designed to “finance the construction of six new schools and a second transportation center. The bond issue also included expansion of the administration building, Katy High cafeteria and vocational facilities, warehouse, and additional parking at Taylor High School.
In the ON REVIEW mailed to District residents in the spring of 1983, the following chart showing current construction projects appeared:
PROJECT COST PROJECT COMPLETION DATE
Administration Building/ $108,000 March 1983 Site Work
Administration Building $2,600,000 July 1984
Mayde Creek Site $1,500,000 May 1983 Work
High School III (Mayde $18,000,000+ August 1984 Creek High School)/Trans- portation Center
Katy High Vocational/ $800,000 August 1983 Cafeteria Expansion
Mayde Creek Elementary $3,500,000 August 1983
Elementary XII (Pattison) $3,600,000 August 1984
Junior High V(MDJH) $7,500,000 August 1991
Warehouse Expansion $675,000 March 1983
The architects/engineers for the Administration Building, Mayde Creek site work, building, west transportation center, and Junior High V (MPJH) were SHWC/Steinkamp, Galawsky/Johnson. For Mayde Creek Elementary and Elementary XII they were Goleman and Rolfe. For the Warehouse Expansion it was Blethroad.
SKRLA was the contractor on the Administration Building site work and Inman Construction, Inc. was the contractor on Mayde Creek Elementary. Brown and Root was the contractor who did the Mayde Creek site work.
It is interesting that six of the projects: three schools, the transportation center, the expansion at Katy High School and the expansion of the Administration building had not been bid yet at the time of the ON REVIEW brochure.
I have seen the cost of Mayde Creek High School listed at 18 million, but this listing shows that they lumped in the West Transportation Center which tends to hide the actual costs of either project. I believe that the cost of Mayde Creek High School was $17,000. Listed in KISD financial brochures under “Total Cost As a Capital Asset,” Mayde Creek High School has a cost of $57,546,274 which fact indicates that much construction has transpired over the years at this school, just as it has at all the schools with the exception of Wolfe Elementary which, in spite of lots of Board Member representation, seems to have been pretty much ignored.
