School Board OKs Calendar For 2008-’09/Plan Pushes End Of School Unit June 4

In the 2008-2009 school year, Katy school district students won't start their summer break until June 4.

The school board approved the calendar with a 4-3 vote during a Tuesday meeting.

Trustees Tom Law, Rebecca Fox and Christina Crockett voted against the proposal while trustees Joe Adams, Eric Duhon, Judy Snyder and Robert Shaw voted in favor of the plan that would see school finish up in June for the first time.

Trustees reviewed two options, dubbed one and two, before reverting to a proposal Assistant Superintendent Bonnie Holland introduced during a Jan. 23 workstudy meeting.

The plan, which has classes starting on Aug. 25, accommodates 177 instructional days, a Thanksgiving break from Nov. 26-28 and a winter break from Dec. 22-Jan 5, 2009. Spring break would be March 16-20 and a two-day Easter break would begin April 10.

Students will have a Memorial Day holiday from May 25-26 and then return to school for one week before being dismissed on June 4.

Fox was one of the most vocal critics of the plan. She said parents have told her they would like more breaks in the fall and that even one three-day weekend can be a "lifesaver."

"This option has students attending school for one week before a Labor Day break and then 11 weeks from Labor Day to the week of Thanksgiving without a break," she said before the vote.

Rylander Elementary School parent Sean Rooney, who came to speak before the board on another issue, commented on the approved calendar.

"I personally would rather have a day off for the kids," he said.

Also at the meeting, Superintendent Alton Frailey recognized coach Gary Joseph and the Katy High School football team for winning the Division II 5A State Championship game.
