SO WHO ARE WE?
So just exactly who makes up the “leadership” group of The Katy Citizen Watchdog$? Well, in general the Watchdog “leadership” doesn’t claim to represent anyone but themselves, but we do believe that we are pretty typical of parents/taxpayers that reside in the Katy ISD community. Since the term “diversity” is "in," we thought you might like to know that the Watchdog “leadership” group diversely represents, what we consider, mainstream America as a whole. We all share a fervent love of this great country and all those individuals that have worked, sacrificed and died to make this nation the greatest on Earth. We believe in representative government and expect our elected officials to be of the same mind-set.
There are seven (7) of us that comprise the “leadership” portion of the group. We regularly meet to cuss and discuss various issues facing the district. We have a propensity for Mexican food (although Italian food is starting to make inroads), and we spread our business around. We don’t always agree on everything but that’s why we work so well together.
As for our backgrounds, we live in Nottingham Country, Westfield, Westfield Estates, Seven Lakes, Cinco Ranch and Falcon Point. We're all married and have spouses who put up with us.
We all have kids, one of us has twin 18 year old girls (how scary is that?) who we think are all pretty special. Those kids have been enrolled or are enrolled at Mayde Creek Junior High, Morton Ranch High School, Memorial Parkway Junior High, Katy High School, Taylor High School, McDonald Junior High, McRoberts Elementary, Rhoads Elementary, McMeans Jr. High, Hayes Elementary, Faith West, Pope John XXIII and Nottingham Elementary. Our kids range in age from 16 months to 36 years old.
We've all lived in the Katy area since 1973, 1981, 1984 and 2002, two (2) of us are Katy High School graduates (Class of ’78 and ’79), two (2) of us grew up in the same neighborhood and some of us have been in the Houston area since 1963, 1968, 1969, 1984 and 1990; there are three (3) native Texans among us (one (1) is fourth generation, another is fifth generation). The rest of us are from somewhere else originally but we got here just as fast as we could!
We range in age from 40 to 66!
One of us has been a teacher and a KISD Board Member. Two (2) of us work in the oil and gas industry, one of us is a computer geek whose father served on the KISD Board in the 1970s, another is a writer and full-time Mr. Mom, another is a healthcare consultant and current Trustee, and last, but certainly not least, we have one (1) political consultant (no it’s ok, he’s really a good guy!).
We've attended or graduated from The University of Texas (2005 BCS National Football Champions/Hook-em!), Texas A&M University (the school that only dreams of being a national champion of anything), Texas Tech University, Kansas University, Southwest Texas State University and USL (those crazy Rajun Cajuns).
As you can see we’re all different but we share a single goal and that is to improve KISD. We are also here to provide parents and taxpayers with truthful information about various topics that affect you and your family so that you can make informed decisions about the future of this district.
KCW CREED
OUR GOALS FOR THE DISTRICT:
· The Watchdog$ want KISD to maintain a balanced budget.
· The Watchdog$ want more tax dollars committed to instruction matters.
· The Watchdog$ want fewer tax dollars spent on administration at every level.
· The Watchdog$ want fewer tax dollars spent on construction.
· The Watchdog$ want the KISD School Board and Superintendent to be more accountable to the taxpayers.
· The Watchdog$ want the KISD School Board and Superintendent to show fiscal responsibility when deciding how to spend taxpayer dollars.
· The Watchdog$ want to establish a dialogue with the KISD School Board and the Superintendent.
· The Watchdog$ want the KISD School Board and Superintendent to be more forthcoming in how crucial decisions are made in the district. The secrecy must stop.
· The Watchdog$ would like for the district to set a goal in improving our statewide ranking from “Acceptable” to “Exemplary”.
· The Watchdog$ believe that any future bond proposals should provide an itemized list of options so that each voter can pick and choose only those items that they feel are necessary for the district.
· The Watchdog$ want an “Open Budget” process. Budget hearings should be held as town hall meetings to encourage more public involvement.
OUR POLITICAL GOALS:
· The Watchdog$ believe that KISD school board positions should be changed to single member districts.
· The Watchdog$ believe in term limits for school board members.
· The Watchdog$ believe that school board elections should be moved from May to November to coincide with general elections.
OUR SHORT-TERM GOAL
· Get Fred to stop smoking!!!!
